Varousi | Trikala

Varousi is the old listed neighbourhood of Trikala, which spreads out over the eastern side of Frourio, the Castle. It used to be the city’s aristocratic quarters and retains the city’s traditional architectural style with narrow alleys, churches and many traditional houses and mansions that are preserved to this day, several of which have been maintained and restored, while many have been abandoned to decay. Wandering through Trikala’s traditional neighbourhood one can look out on to architectural forms and experience the human measure and popular aesthetics of its residents. A covered balcony, a wooden door fighting time and decay, a ceramic jewel or stone relief on church walls, move visitors and travel them to times gone by, away from the modern city. The houses of Varousi consisted of two floors, with bay windows and covered balconies, tiled roofs and spacious rooms with large windows. Built in a northern Greek style, stone walls on the ground floor and timber and thinner walls for the first floor, they exude the air of nobility and prosperity of the city’s Greek residents during the last two centuries of Ottoman rule. Noteworthy mansions in Varousi are those of Simis, Dikos, Vlitsakis, Giannousopoulos, Anagnostiadis, Margaris, Klidonopoulos, and others.
