Xanthi

Xanthi, the capital of Eastern Macedonia’s & Thrace’s homonymous prefecture, is a spectacular, multicultural city with a long standing history, otherwise known as “Thracian Lady” or the “Thousand Colors’ City”. Those characterizations, evocative of its multi-layered socio-economic fabric and its historical wealth, become apparent through its well-preserved, landmark architecture, which is traditional of Northern Greece. The city’s inherent oriental element manifests itself through the colorful Flee Market, spreading exotic spices and odors on a weekly basis. The large number of youth studying at Democritus University activates the city’s vibrant pulse. Xathni is divided into two urban districts, each bearing its own, distinct identity: The Old District with its wonderful town halls, built during the 19th and early 20th century, and the Tobacco District with its warehouses, standing testimonies of a trade that has been instrumental for the city’s economic, social and cultural growth in time. There is plenty of sight-seeing in Xanthi’s hinterland. There are historical sites to visit like monasteries and the ancient city of Avdira, natural wonders such as the forest of Haidous, amazing wetlands over the river Nestos and Lake Vistonida and picturesque villages, the Pomakochoria, known for their unique culture and architecture and located in the Northern part of the prefecture.
