Archaeological museum of Avdira

In present-day Avdira, there exist two museums, the Archaeological and the Folk Museum. The later is housed in an old neoclassical building, which served initially as a school and was constructed in 1860. Its collection consists of local folklore. The permanent collection of the Archaeological Museum consists of objects excavated from the ancient city and its cemeteries and spans over a period from the 7th century BC up until the 12th century AD. The city’s progress in time is presented through various archaeological findings, illustrative texts and diagrams, photographs and drawings. Through its displays the museum narrates everyday life in ancient Avdira, burial customs, occupations, religion, economy and politics. In the region of Avdira, there are organized beaches with all the amenities, such as Skala Avdiron, Agios Giannis and Mandra.
