Mount Vitsi

With an altitude of 2128 meters, Vitsi or Verno is located between the prefectures of Florina and Kastoria. Apart from its highest peak (Vitsi), there are other peaks such as Vigla (1,932 m), Sikavitsa (1,863 m), Platy (1,759 m) and Tsouka (1,679 m). Vitsi was the site of some of the fiercest fighting during the last period of the Greek Civil War. With dense beech forests on its slopes, meadows, streams and rivers, it is a rich habitat where many animals and birds find shelter. The most important rivers are Drosopotamos, Vyssineas and Xeropotamos. In Vitsi you will also find many species of orchids, while the variety of flora is complemented by spring and autumn mushrooms, the most famous of which is Volitis edidimo. Apart from the contact with nature, Vitsi offers snow lovers the opportunity to ski at the Vitsi Ski Centre. It is located at an altitude of 1800 meters and at a distance of 22 km from Kastoria. It has three ski slopes, one for Snowboard, beginners’ slope, Baby lift, chalet, restaurant, cafeteria, snow bar, parking, ski school, and Ski-Snowboard rental. At its eastern foothills is located Nymphaeon, one of the most picturesque mountain villages in Greece and an essential stop (or destination) of your escape in West Macedonia.
