Doiran Lake

Doiran Lake

So simply, by stretching the arms, the body becomes a compass: Mouries in the east, the village of Doirani in the west, Mount Beles stands in the north and at the centre of our interest Lake Doirani with a surface stretching at 43 km2, of which only 15. 8 are in our country. And if one looks historically at its waters, Paeonia Lake existed once here, which occupied 13, 000 square meters and was formed in the Pre-Ice geological period, after intense earthquakes. This seismic feature is still present as it is located on the boundary between two tectonic plates. The wild reeds, yarrows, bulrushes and straws are part of its flora. On the banks, there is a dense vegetation of dunes, rush, white willows and sycamore trees. The lake is a temporary shelter for 36 rare species of birds. Among the most impressive are pygmy cormorant and the Dalmatian pelican, one of the largest birds in the world since its length reaches up to 1. 80 meters with a wingspan of over 3 meters. Mallard ducks, wigeons, northern pintails, grebes, glossy ibises, white egrets, great egrets (and everything else in. . . egrets), cormorants crying strangely in the trees and flying in spectacular formations and mute swans with orange beaks buried in the water for foraging, are the birds that give colour and life in the quiet water. And when winter comes and the water freezes, the youth slip in any way on the ice looking strangely beneath their feet carps, sheatfish, roaches, pikes and bleaks. Even deeper it is the spirlin, the perch, but also rarer species such as the dace, the mosquito fish, the eel, the gudgeon, and the true loach. Other fish live along with them, too, now less in numbers because of falling water level and heavy fishing. Anyway, the lake is a wonderful destination for a swim or slide, for a walk within colour in spring and for photographs in autumn.
