Old Fortress of Corfu

Approaching Corfu from the sea, the first thing the visitor sees is the Old Fortress, a monument witnessing the turbulent history of the island and the most eminent reference point of the city. Moreover, in its initial phase, the medieval city was limited to the current Old Fortress. It is one of the most impressive fortifications of the south eastern Mediterranean. Its construction was initiated by the Byzantines, however its current form is due to the Venetians and some additions by the British. The Doric temple of Saint George, the youngest British buildings, but also the Venetian prisons restored in recent years are still preserved in very good condition. One can see the Contra Fossa (moat), the ramparts, the old powder magazine and the barracks. During your visit it is worth spending some time as the open and sheltered areas along with the arcades make a very interesting tour. Pass through the imposing wooden door with large spikes and head towards the two symmetrical stone staircases which lead to the upper levels. Follow the path uphill to the top of the fortress for a panoramic view of the city and the Bay of Garitsa, then walk down to the port of Mandraki where anchor many sailing boats.
