Pamvotida Lake

Lake Pamvotida, better known as Lake Ioannina, as the capital of Epirus is reflected in its waters, is famous for its natural beauty, its fish farming wealth and the fascinating history of its island. It is located at an altitude of 483 metres and is about 8 kilometres long, 1.5 to 5.4 km wide and 11 metres deep, with a total surface area of 19.4 square kilometres. It is enriched by underground springs of water from the surrounding mountains and its water level is controlled by a canal that flows into the river Kalama. The lake produces famous eels and delicious crayfish, while the fish breeding station of the Municipal Lake of Ioannina produces small quantities of caviar and fry for fish farms and the enrichment of lakes and rivers. Many young people – members of nautical clubs – are active in Pamvotida and rowing competitions of international interest are held. Lake Ioannina is famous for its island. It is the second Greek lake, after Agios Achillios of Mikri Prespa, to have an inhabited island. It is famous for its traditional settlement, Byzantine monasteries and the place where Ali Pasha lived his last days and was assassinated in 1822. The lake is also tied to various legends, such as that of Kyra Frosini. Another legend tells of the Beylerbey of Rumeli (Ottoman governor of the Southern Balkans)
