Porto Lagos Lagoon

Porto Lagos lagoon with brackish water and several islets has a rich avifauna (similar to that of the lake) and is considered a bird watchers paradise by ornithologists. It is also a rich fishing ground with excellent catches of mullet, sea bass, eels, sea bream and smelt (atherina), which the visitor can taste in the nearby taverns of the village of Porto Lagos. The picturesque village-port is built on the peninsula that separates Vistonida from the sea. The best known and most popular landmark of Porto Lagos lagoon are the two small islands where two pilgrimage churches are located, Agios Nikolaos and Pantanassa. The islets, which belong to the Vatopedi monastery of Mount Athos, are connected to the mainland by a wooden footbridge. The church of Agios Nikolaos dates back to 1904 and has a high bell tower added in 1930.
