Monastery of Timios Prodromos of Naoussa

The Holy monastery of Timios Prodromos (Venerable Forerunner) of Naoussa is situated into a picturesque and verdurous region amongst Naoussa and Yiannakochori village. The monastery built during the 7th century, is believed to be probably the oldest one in Naoussa. During the centuries, the monastery was destroyed several times due to the important role that it played in the national history of this place. Taking into account the information provided by turkish documents, the monastery was burnt down in 1822, when the temple was the only building extant. The building was renovated in 1844 to be burnt down again from the Bulgarians in 1906 who also destroyed its cells. Once again the cells were reconstructed but in 1944, during a conflict between the greek national resistance with the troops of the german occupation, they were burned again. The Holy Metropolis of Veria and Naoussa reestablished the monastery again and today it is operating as a monastery for women, while several attempts are taking place, to renovate the whole monasterial space and to make use of the existing facilities.
