Monastery of Timios Prodromos

The Holy monastery of Timios Prodromos (Venerable Forerunner) is a historical monastery founded in the 14th century, on the foot of Pieria above the river Aliakmonas. Many important figures of the monasticism had the chance to lead an ascetic life there, such as Grigorios Palamas, Agios Dionysios the Olympian, Agios Theonas, Kosmas the Aitolian, Osios Antonios and Osios Theofanis. The monastery took its present form around the halves of the last century. Its architecture copies the construction form used in castles. The entry of the monastery, built with limestone and red ceramic paving stones, looks quite impressive. The church is a three-aisled basilica, and its iconostasis is dated to 1835. Its wonderful columns are decorated with numerous representations. The impressive icons of the Virgin Mary and the Forerunner portrayed in the temple were created before the destruction of 1822. In the temple is also found the relic from the holy hand of John the Baptist, ceded by the Holy monastery of Dionysus of Mouth Athos. The guest quarters, the bells, the courtyard of the monastery, the colors of its peacocks and the primitive fridge, the cave where they use to store food, formerly named “kryologos”, give to the Holy monastery of Timios Prodromos its unique aspect.
