Varossi settlement | Edessa

Varossi is Edessa’s traditional neighbourhood, which developed during the years of Ottoman rule, as a continuation of the Byzantine city. Despite the destruction it suffered during the Nazi occupation when it was burnt, Varossi has retained the traditional plan and architectural core of the city. The regeneration of the old neighbourhood started in 1983 when it was declared a listed area. Many houses that date back to the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century have been preserved and restored. The houses of Varossi are constructed in the Macedonian architectural style with roofed balconies, large windows with shutters and bay windows overlooking the narrow streets of the old city quarters. Amongst them there are several newer houses with neoclassical features, which have also been preserved. Wandering through the picturesque alleys of Varossi visitors discover images of the old city which have survived the decay of time or modernized forms, keeping their beautiful facades and the harmony of traditional architecture.
