Drama

Drama is a city with a rich history, unique natural beauty and great architectural heritage. From antiquity to modern times, the city has preserved its character, combining Byzantine and neoclassical elements with modern urban life. The city developed significantly during the Byzantine period, as evidenced by the surviving parts of the Byzantine Walls and the Church of Agia Sophia (10th century), one of the oldest surviving monuments in Drama. Also, the Archaeological Museum of Drama hosts findings that tell the history of the region from prehistoric times to the Roman and Byzantine era. An important element of Drama’s architectural heritage is the neoclassical and Ottoman mansions that are preserved in the city centre, such as the Anastasiadis, Tzimou and Michaelides mansions. Many of the town’s mansions were built during the period of Ottoman rule and were renovated at the beginning of the 20th century, when Drama experienced an economic boom, mainly due to tobacco production. Today, several of them house cultural venues, hotels and shops. Drama is famous for its nature, the most important landmark being the Park of Agia Varvara, a green oasis with lakes, bridges and traditional cafes. In addition, the town is the base for those who want to explore Mount Falakro, known for its ski resort and hiking trails. The town hosts the International Short Film Festival, one of the most important cultural institutions in Greece. Also, in December, it hosts the Oniroupoli, a large Christmas village that attracts visitors from all over the country. Local gastronomy includes traditional products such as the wines of Drama, known for their high quality, and smoked sausages, which are part of the gastronomic tradition of the region.
