The Hamza Bey Mosque, at the intersection of Egnatia and Venizelou Streets, is the oldest Muslim mosque in Thessaloniki. It was built in 1467-1468 by Hafsa Hatoun, daughter of the daughter of the Sultan’s official Hamza Bey, military commander of the city, from whom it takes its name. At the end of the 16th century, two rectangular vaulted rooms were added on the north and south sides, as well as a peripheral portico creating a courtyard. New repairs, according to the inscription, were made to the monument in the 17th century. After the exchange of populations, the Alcazar cinema operated in the area of the covered courtyard. It was badly damaged by the earthquakes of 1978, and in recent years the monument has been thoroughly fixed and restored so that it can be visited.
