Naoussa

Naoussa. The city combines soil with water, green color with white, the modern with the traditional element. A city full of old mansions, following the traditional macedonian architecture. The wines of Naoussa are known for centuries now, not only in our country, but world widely as well, while in addition, it should be noticed that it was previously rather famous thanks to its textile and cannery industry. The city is built on the eastern slopes of Vermio, under the top of Ntoyrlia (2. 027 m. ) in altitude of 330 meters. It extends majestically above the immense plain, while the view from the city travels the glance up to Thermaikos Sea. The exact date of the foundation of the city is not verified, however it is presumed that the general of Sultan Murat II, Chatzi Ahmet Evrenozogloy, forced the habitants of the neighboring mountains to come and live in the newly founded city around 1420-1423. The city owes to him the privileges enjoyed during the Ottoman domination. Thanks to these particular conditions, Naoussa, compared to other neighboring cities, was allowed to prosper in peace. Its prosperity and wealth however, led afterwards to its condemnation, since its strategic geographical position attracted the ambitious and avid Ali Pasha of Ioannina, who conquer the city in 1804 and the city remained under his possession up to 1812.
