Church of Agios Spyridonas | Corfu city

The most important religious monument on the island, the church of St. Spyridon, which houses the relics of the patron saint of the city, attracts thousands of believers who flock each year for pilgrimage. The church, built in 1589, buoys by its huge fortress-like bell tower, the tallest in the city. You can enter the church either from the Iroon Kypriakou Agona Square or from the Aghiou Spyridonos street and look up at the Renaissance ceiling paintings, the temple dome with the Ruby-coloured saints- who are not at all reminiscent of the Byzantine ones-, a work by the Ionian Islands’ painter Doxaras later restored by other eminent artists. The marble altar and the luxurious shrine are 19th-century works. It is worth attending at least one of the totally four processions of the saint which take place every year (on August 11th, the first Sunday of November, on Palm Sunday and in Easter Saturday morning), accompaniment by the island’s Philharmonic bands.
