Bridge of Konitsa

The awe-inspiring Aoos Gorge ends at Konitsa, after winding between Tymfi and Smolikas mountains for a distance of 10 kilometres. The entrance to the gorge is marked by the famous stone single-arch Konitsa Bridge, built in 1871 by master craftsman Ziogas Frontzos from Pyrsogianni. It is one of the tallest bridges in the Balkans with a height of 20 metres and a span of 36 metres. The bell that warned travellers not to cross the bridge when a strong wind was blowing is still to be found under the arch.
