Byzantine Museum of Ioannina

The Byzantine Museum of Ioannina is housed in a former military building in the acropolis of Itz Kale inside the castle. In the seven rooms of the museum archaeological objects and findings (sculptures, coins, ceramics, icons, pictures, step-doors, gospels, manuscripts, old books) from all over Epirus are presented. They date from the 4th to the 19th century and are developed in three exhibition-chronological sections (Early Christian, Byzantine, Post-Byzantine period). The neighbouring Ottoman building of the ‘Treasury’, which is a branch of the Byzantine Museum, houses the Silversmithing Exhibition. Ecclesiastical and secular works (jewellery, household utensils, weapons, blessing crosses, reliquaries, chalices, etc.) from private collections and donations (by Archbishop Spyridon, the silversmith Konstantinos Ioannidis from Ioannina and Titika Velli-Dogoritis) are on display.
