Halil Bey Mosque (Palia Mousiki) | Kavala

The Khalil Bey complex is located in the middle of the peninsula near the fort and includes the Khalil Bey mosque and part of the madrasah (seminary). The surviving Khalil Bey Mosque, a square building with a dome and an exonarthex (external entrance lobby) was built in 1900 on the site of an earlier mosque of the 16th century. On that spot there was a three-aisled Christian temple that was converted into a Muslim mosque. The foundations of the temple are visible through the glass floor in the mosque. During the 1930s, the mosque housed the Municipal Philharmonic, so this monument is known as “Old Music”. Since its restoration the mosque has housed the cultural activities of the Municipality. The adjacent elegant seminary building, which was built on the site of an older building from the 17th century, has eight rooms, while its facade is closed by a peristyle with a wooden archway. Folklore collections and the cultural club of “Panagia” are hosted in the madrasah.
