The peninsula of Panagia, east of the port, is the historical castle town of Kavala from antiquity up to the 19th century. In the once walled district parts of the perimeter wall, the fortress at the top of the hill, its old urban structure, several houses of traditional architecture and the oldest monuments of the city have been preserved. The tour of the Panagia peninsula starts from the port at its West end, through Theodorou Poulidis street and ends by the perimeter walls at the northern eastern end at Kamares. Starting at the west end the most important and interesting monuments the visitor will see are the Imaret, the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, the temple of the Assumption of the Virgin, the house of Muhammad Ali, the fortress and descending on the north side through Lambrou Katsoni street, the Kamares or Arches, which stand as the most recognisable landmark of the city, as well as the adjacent old shipyard. Along the edges of the triangular peninsula rise parts of the fortified city wall that closes with the land wall near Kamares. The original core of the castle was built in the 5th century BC, it was strengthened during the Byzantine period (6th century), renovated by the Ottomans in 1391 and additional structures were made throughout Turkish rule.
