Kompsatos bridge | Iasmos

Over the river Kompsato, which originates from the Rhodope Mountains and flows into Lake Vistonida next to the village of Polyanthos, rises the stone bridge of the same name. It is located a short distance north of the Komotini-Iasmou-Xanthi provincial road near Iasmos. It was built during the Ottoman period (17th-18th century), although the information signs describe it as a “Byzantine- medieval bridge”. It is three-arched with a height of 12 metres and an opening of the central arch of approximately 22 metres. Its West bow has, unfortunately, collapsed. Near the bridge is the Byzantine castle of Polyanthos and the remains of an early Christian basilica next to the village. The Kompsatos river is associated with ancient Kossinitis, while older maps record it as Xiropotamos.
