The fortress-Acropolis of Kavala

The acropolis of Kavala castle was built by the Ottomans in 1391 and extended at the beginning of the 15th century on Byzantine foundations. Its northern part adjoins the land wall, while a transverse wall with a gate divides the citadel into an inner and outer enclosure. The high circular tower which was the last point of bastion of the defenders of the fortress, is integrated into the dividing wall. The tower has been restored and can be visited, while from its top the visitor has an excellent view of the city and the surrounding area. There are two restored buildings within the citadel, one was a prison and later an ammunition and food storehouse and the second the outpost of the fortresses defenders. The fort and its buildings are used by the Municipality for recreational and cultural activities.
